Celebrating Rímur epic chant and Vikivaki circle dance in a futurist solarpunk manner with electronic sounds, high frequency lights and computer manipulations, S.L.Á.T.U.R. Rímnadans combines tribalism and techno; a multimedial trance that extracts folklore traditions to a modern rave.

S.L.Á.T.U.R. is a group of composers that has since 2005 organised various experiments, open events, competitions and music projects. The main interests are animated music notation with computer graphics, interactivity, sound experiments and tuning systems, performance art and the development of new traditions and culture.

In Icelandic literature, a ríma (IPA: [ˈriːma], literally “a rhyme”, pl. rímur, [ˈriːmʏr̥]) is an epic poem written in any of the so-called rímnahættir ([ˈrimnaˌhaihtɪr̥], “rímur meters”). They are rhymed, they alliterate and consist of two to four lines per stanza.[1] The plural, rímur, is either used as an ordinary plural, denoting any two or more rímur, but is also used for more expansive works, containing more than one ríma as a whole.

Kveðskapur is the act of performing vísur according to icelandic tradition of Ríma-poetry. Stemma (also called rímnalag or kvæðalag) is the underlying melodic element, which varies during performance according to semi-improvised traditional practice. “Að kveða” can mean both to compose a vísa or to perform kveðskapur. The performer is called kvæðamaður (man) or kvæðakona (woman). Traditionally kvæði is performed alone, sometimes with the audience joining on the seimur, which is the last tone of each stemma.

Vikivaki is a type of dance, similar to Faroese folk dance. It is performed with a group of people holding hands, normally in a circle formation. The participants chant together, or only refrain, keeping rhythm with the dance movements.

Icelandic Vikivaki dance was opposed by the medieval church and for various reasons traditional dancing was abandoned in Iceland. Also, rímur faced a cultural alienation within post-colonial iceland. Western tonality and imported western classical musical instruments could not be assimilated to the rímur chant. Today rímur chant is not practiced in iceland in the traditional style which is more clear in early sound recordings.
